Introduction to a Story Lover

Hello! My name is Brooke and I am a Community Health major. I am a senior and will graduate in Fall 2020. I am really excited about this course because I took Laura's Myth and Folklore course last semester and it was easily the best college course I have ever taken. It helped me get back into writing and made me realize that college classes can actually be fun. I learned about so many different stories in it, too!

Some things about me: I really enjoy reading, and recently my favorite series has been Harry Potter. I love it so much that I actually based my storybook last semester on it. I also love The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater and The Underland Chronicles by Suzanne Collins. I am trying to read 104 books this year so if anyone has any recommendations then I would love to hear them!

Some of my favorite shows are The Office, Parks and Recreation, The Good Place, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Gravity Falls. If you can't tell, I really love comedy and cartoons. Both of those kinds of shows have brought me a lot of joy in the past, and I never seemed to outgrow cartoons like some people do. Aside from spending time reading and watching those shows, a lot of my time is spent taking care of my almost 2-year-old toy poodle, Yumi.

I am currently pre-nursing, and I only have one more class to fulfill my prerequisites for nursing school, but I am not sure if that is where I will end up. My ultimate goal in life is to work for a publishing company like Penguin Random House or Bloomsbury, or create an animated/cartoon show. I'd also love to write a book at some point, and/or train service dogs. Whatever ends up happening, though, I just hope I'm helping others.

Good luck to everyone!

  1. I am so excited to see what you will do with your project this semester, Brooke! In terms of Hogwarts, keep an eye out for Nagas... that is how Nagini got her name! But there is much more to Indian Naga tradition... like the mighty Shesha-Naga, the great cosmic Naga on whom Vishnu sleeps! Wikipedia: Shesha. And what a great book plan... there are so many Indian books I would recommend (as I find out more about your Indian interests, I won't be shy about that ha ha), but here's one from the Myth-Folklore world that I bet you would like: Tristan Strong Punches A Hole In The Sky by Kwame Mbalia. You know I loved that one: Brer Rabbit is a character! One of my fav books that I read over break.
And yay for nursing school... I couldn't be a nurse because I'm one of those people who can't cope with blood, but there is so much overlap between the world of nursing and the world of teaching. AND with writing and storytelling. An animated TV show about service dogs... how sweet would that be!
And of course I have to add: your Yumi is adorable :-)

  2. Hi Brooke,
Yay for almost graduating soon! Congratulations on almost making it through. Your dog is so adorable ahhh! I bet she's a handful. In addition, sometimes, you work towards a goal you think is your path, but then you realize it's not what you all are looking for, and that's okay! This just means you are learning slowly who you are and what you want! I can't wait to read your stories because I know they will be good! I would never dream of working for a publishing company because I am SO SO bad at writing.
Good luck in all of your endeavors!

  3. Hi Brooke,
Congrats on graduating this year! I am a senior as well! It really is crazy how fast these past few years have flown by. Your dog, Yumi is adorable! My girlfriend has a Yorkie named Winston, and it did not take very long for me to fall in love with him, haha! It's outstanding that you want to work for a publishing company. I have always been more of a STEM guy myself since I consider writing my weakness, but hopefully that improves a bit after this course. Good luck in your future endeavors! Whatever path you take, just enjoy the ride!

  4. Hey Brooke!
Its so cool that you're pre-med but also want to work for a publishing company or on a cartoon! I'm a firm believer that you should try to do all you can to develop your interests, because it will always give you more options. There will always be some jobs for cartoonists/animators/publishers, but having a pre-med background in the right situation and the right job will put you a cut above the rest! On a lighter note, I love the Good Place! I havent finished S3 on Netflix but its the next show on my list! And your dog is adorable! Just a recommendation that I am giving everyone: Go do something out of your comfort zone! It will always challenge you as a person to grow and evolve, which is important for living your best life! Good luck with everything!

  5. Hey Brooke! I agree. I took the course a few semesters ago and it was great. That's awesome that you enjoy reading. I think that reading is one of the most useful things that somebody can do. I wish I could watch the new season of the Good Place, but the early episodes aren't on Hulu anymore and it's just a pain to look for them.

  6. Brooke,
I have never read the Harry Potter series before, but I actually just got the books from my boyfriend’s aunt two nights ago! I am so excited to finally get the chance to read them! 104 books?!?! That’s a huge goal! But, I have no doubt that you’ll accomplish it! If you haven’t read the two books that Rachel Hollis has written, I 100% recommend that you read them! They’re great uplifting and influential books, if you’re into that kind of stuff!

  7. Hi Brooke! It looks like we have a lot in common! I'm a Psych major but I have an interest in Community Health/Public Health since I'm a Pre-PA major. There's a lot of systematic problems that limits people from receiving quality health care and I really hope that more people can in the future. And I've had friends read and love the Raven Cycle too! I'll have to put that series higher on my reading list, so thanks for the rec! I see that you love Michael Schur shows too! I just watched the series finale of the Good Place and IT BROKE MY HEART BECAUSE IT WAS SO GOOD! I would recommend Brooklyn 99 if you need another feel-good show.

  8. Hey Brooke!
Your major sounds super interesting! Like you, I will also graduate this upcoming fall. I think spending 8 years trying to graduate, is a super long time. I do agree that Laura’s Mythology and Folklore class last semester was the best class so far. All the shows you have listed are great and so are the book series! I hope this semester goes well for you!

  9. Hey Brooke,

Your major sounds very interesting, its not something I hear a lot of at all! I loved the picture you included of your dog, I wish you posted more! You and I are the same in the idea that we never outgrow cartoons, one of my favorites is Adventure Time. I am a huge office fan as well, though I have never seen parks and rec. Good Luck this semester!

  10. Hi Brooke,
I definitely haven't grown out of watching animated movies either. I think they bring so much joy, teach so many lessons, and have some funny hidden jokes. Also, Harry Potter is one of my favorite book series! So far, this is my first class with this professor, but it's been really great, and I'm glad people get the chance to have her as a professor more than once!

  11. Hey Brooke!

I am so excited I found another Parks and Rec and Gravity Falls lover! I actually based my week 2 story off of Parks and Rec! I have been rewatching all of Gravity Falls on disney+ and no one understands my love for it. Your dog is also super cute I am obsessed with the name. Good luck with nursing school!

  12. Hello Brooke,
I'm an avid Harry Potter and Avatar fan as well! Any reason in particular you want to read 104 books this year? Seems like a random number to me. I think your dog is super cute. Congrats on graduating soon. This is my last semester and I'm very ready to be done.
